According to LFP Police Chief, Mike Harden, on 2/6/23 at approximately 1801hrs [6 PM], a known male subject called 911 requesting assistance at a residence where he periodically stays. The male was in an apparent mental/emotional crisis and believed a family member was injured inside of the residence. Due to recent violent history and statements towards police by this subject, LFP officers staged a short distance away and tried speaking with the male by phone.

Unfortunately, a communication breakdown occurred, and the affected subject kicked in the door of the residence, causing damage and frightening the female homeowner and two young children inside. Telephone contact was made with the female homeowner and officers were able to safely remove the woman and children from the home.

Officers and a KC Negotiator continued efforts to communicate with the male and de-escalate him. Unfortunately, the subject was acutely unreasonable, believed to be possibly armed, and made homicidal statements toward law enforcement. Efforts to de-escalate the male were unsuccessful. A SWAT team was consulted and declined to respond to this incident.

Due to recent legislative changes impacting law enforcement responses, the decision was made to leave the area once the female homeowner and children were safe. This incident is still under active investigation.
