LFP COUNCIL UNSURE ON KEY ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT ISSUES

If you followed my invitation to tune into Monday’s ZOOM meeting discussions over the proposed ADU provisions recommended by the Planning Commission, you may have been somewhat confused as was I.

The Planning Director, Steve Bennett, took the council through the commission’s written proposal, and based on the council comments, I suspected this was several council members first reading of the proposed conditions. Further, some of the concerns voiced by the council would suggest the council had not studied the wealth of information provided them regarding the research conducted by ex-council members, planning commissioners, and many statewide city programs.

After spending time attempting to re-write some of the more contentious issues, such as owner-occupancy, parking, and the definition of subordinate, the council frustrations resulted in their request of the Planning Director, Steve Bennett, to submit new language that provides clarifications on key issues. The council also questioned the need to even pursue developing an ADU ordinance given the State is currently crafting the provisions supposedly all cities legibly must follow.

The council is taking up this matter again this Thursday during their regularly scheduled meeting. Tune in to watch the ZOOM meeting. It should be both interesting and revealing to witness the positions each council member favors for the list of ADU provisions and their willingness to defend them should the State mandates differ.
