As reported in MyNorthwest.com, two nations that criminalize homosexuality — Egypt and Iran — are scheduled to play in a World Cup “Pride Match” in Seattle on June 26, an event intended to celebrate LGBTQ+ communities as part of the city’s Pride Festival. Both countries’ football federations have formally objected. Egypt sent a letter to FIFA rejecting any activities that support homosexuality, while Iran’s sports minister and federation president said they will not allow LGBTQ+ symbolism around their team.
Despite the objections, Seattle’s local World Cup organizing committee says the Pride Match will proceed as planned, highlighting it as an opportunity to celebrate LGBTQIA+ communities and support local arts, businesses, and advocacy groups. The event will include LGBTQ+ art installations and partnerships with local organizations. Seattle PrideFest was already planned for the same day. FIFA has not commented.
Moderate rain, with a high of 51 and low of 40 degrees. Don't forget your umbrella! Patchy rain nearby during the morning, sunny in the afternoon, overcast in the evening, patchy rain nearby overnight.
The cost and disruption to our community for this project is unnecessary to say the least. Not enough community voice on the necessity of the round about was given and the community meeting wasn’t open to anyone opposing the project.
