Last evening at approximately 10:10 PM, a report of a single-car accident was heard over PSERN radio near the 100 block of NW 205th St in Shoreline, with bystanders reportedly trying to extricate the trapped driver from the vehicle, which had landed on its side, and was "fully involved" (on fire) after crashing into a fire hydrant and fence.
The driver was so badly burned that it was initially reported as an "obvious DOA" by fire crews (heard live over the radio), but once extricated, medics found they were breathing with "extensive 3rd degree burns", so they were rushed to Harborview. Harborview is the only Level 1 (regional) Trauma Center serving Washington, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho.
Shoreline Fire PIO, Michelle Pidduck, confirmed that extensive 3rd degree burn victims have a very diminished rate of survival, and "It was bad. We talked to him [the firefighter who reported the DOA], and it should have been obvious that it was a DOA. It was amazing that it was not. Everything was melted, remelted, and deformed. It's amazing that the guy was not. It was that bad that it seemed a given, and then it was miraculous that it was not. When we got him into the hospital, he was still breathing on his own."
However, according to King County Sheriff's Office PIO, Brandyn Hull, "the Medical Examiner's office did eventually pronounce the person deceased".
