Meet Perris: new contributing writer

I have always enjoyed telling stories, so it is no surprise that I found myself pursuing journalism. Originally from a small town in California, I came to Seattle in 2020 with the goal to grow as a writer. I began my career in journalism at The Falcon, Seattle Pacific University’s school newspaper. Seattle is a place that I still call home, but I am eager to get to know and report for the community of Lake Forest Park.

Beginning as a staff writer, I covered a range of topics and events, from on-campus protests to profile stories on students as well as faculty members. After two years as a news and features writer, I took on the role of Perspective Editor. As Perspective Editor, it was my job to search high and low for writers who would want to contribute an opinion article. I didn’t have to look far, because students and faculty alike had ideas and opinions that they were more than willing to share. During my senior year of college, I became the Audience Engagement Editor, running The Falcon’s social media accounts.

After serving time as an editor, I realized how much I missed writing my own stories and interviewing people, so I started to look for other newspapers. In 2023, I began freelance reporting for the Snohomish County Tribune and continue to do so. I have interviewed community members, featured small businesses, attended city council meetings and local events. I have grown to love and appreciate Snohomish County through my reporting.

Interviewing is my favorite part of being a journalist. As a self–proclaimed extrovert, I love talking to people. Interviewing individuals about their passions, seeing how dedicated they are to their business and community is something that truly warms my heart.

When I am not typing up an article or covering events, I’m typically on an easy to moderate level hike, or meeting up with friends at one of the many coffee shops in Seattle.
