Voters in four states — Arizona, Colorado, Nebraska and Washington — are on track to pass or have passed measures to restrict transgender athletes’ participation in sports, a key policy focus of the Trump administration.

According to the ACLU of Washington, I-638 discriminates against transgender girls and subjects all girls — and only girls — to invasive sex verification procedures before they can play girls’ sports in Washington.

At a time when transgender people face an onslaught of attacks, this law will make transgender students even more vulnerable to bullying and stigma.

ACLU of Washington Executive Director Michele Storms had the following reaction:

“This is a devastating blow to our state’s history of inclusivity and belonging, and our collective goal of making Washington a place where all children can thrive. Washington has long been a place that protected a child’s freedom to be themselves no matter their gender identity. However, this initiative cements discrimination into law and denies an entire group of students opportunities shared by their peers simply because of who they are. Laws that target transgender girls do nothing to support our youth; they only foster discrimination and bullying, and sow division. The ACLU of Washington will never waver in its commitment to transgender people and their right to exist as their full selves, and we will explore all potential next steps to uphold the rights of transgender girls and their access to school sports. Transgender youth are our neighbors, children, friends and family, and like everyone, they have the right to live and play in our communities as their true selves.”
