On August 4, we received several phone calls from community members reporting that “ICE was harassing people” in the 4400 block of NE 178th Street. Commander Adams, I, and several patrol officers immediately responded to the location, following our policy and protocol. Upon arrival, I spoke with one of the ICE agents, who was in uniform and driving a clearly marked ICE vehicle. The agent explained that they were searching for an individual who had an outstanding warrant, had avoided apprehension and left the area on foot. The agent also explained that they had searched the exterior of a residence after obtaining permission from the homeowner.

I asked why our department had not been notified in advance of the operation. The federal agent explained that this was not an “operation” in our town but that they had been following the suspect through several jurisdictions and could not have anticipated that the individual would flee into Lake Forest Park.

After speaking with me, the ICE agents left the area. I also spoke with several community members who had gathered at the scene. I explained that LFPPD officers do not enforce federal immigration laws or policies and our job is to respond to the scene, assess the circumstances, maintain the safety to everybody involved, and take the appropriate action consistent with applicable was, regulations, and department policies. I received positive feedback regarding how our department responded to the situation and handled the concerns of the community.
