Solar overtakes coal for first month on record

Solar panels provided a record
12.8% of the United States’ electricity last month, while coal fell to
its fourth-lowest monthly share ever, according to analysis by the global energy think tank Ember. It’s the first time in U.S. history that solar eclipsed coal for a whole month.

Solar energy in America has grown
over the past decade. In 2025, America harnessed seven times as much
energy from the sun as we did in 2016. Solar growth has been
particularly pronounced in southeastern states. Florida, Arkansas and
Mississippi each produced less than 1% of their electricity from
renewable energy sources in 2016. In 2025, they produced 12%, 10% and 7%
respectively, with much of that growth coming from solar.

“Renewable energy is a 50-state story,” said Johanna Neumann, the Senior Director of Environment America’s Campaign for 100% Renewable Energy in this article by AP News on June 10th. “It’s good news for our health and our planet that solar continues to grow.”
