At about 6:15 AM Sunday morning, LFP Police and Shoreline Fire were called to a report of a car that had crashed onto the Burke Gilman Trail and was then driving on the trail at NE 153rd St and Beach Dr NE. After missing a sharp turn at the bottom of NE 153rd and going down an embankment, the driver appeared to have only a bleeding finger. It appeared the car's airbag deployed. LFP PD apprehended a second perp at NE 153rd and Bothell Way. As the scene unfolded, several trail users passed by... a reminder that the incident could've been much worse.
A longtime neighbor who lives just steps from where the car landed said he overheard the driver state he didn't have a license because he wasn't of age. The neighbor also said no one has ever driven off NE 153rd like this, but that everything from Amazon and Uber Eats to contractors has driven down the Burke Gilman Trail since the posts were removed to prevent car access. He went on to state that someone drove their bike into one of the posts, so out they came. Information heard over the police radio indicated one of the perps lives nearby.

LFP Police Commander Diego Zanella (soon to be interim police chief) issued the following statement:
Earlier today, two subjects stole a vehicle and later crashed it near NE 153rd Street and Beach Dr NE. As officers arrived on scene, both subjects fled on foot but were quickly apprehended by responding officers.
The individuals have refused to identify themselves, and investigators believe alcohol may have been a factor in this incident. Detectives have been called to assist, and the investigation remains ongoing.
We appreciate the community’s patience as officers continue their work. Additional information may be released as it becomes available.
Not old enough to drive but old enough to steal a car
