Representative Shelley Kloba officially filed for re-election to the House of Representatives. Rep. Kloba has served the 1st Legislative District since her 2016 election and looks forward to continuing her role in supporting the local community. Her priorities are freedom, opportunity, and safety for all Washingtonians.
Last legislative session, Rep. Kloba served as the Vice Chair of the Technology, Economic Development, & Veterans House Committee, where she passed legislation regarding AI regulations and consumer protection. This committee helped pass HB 2225, which created new regulations in AI’s use as a companion chatbot aimed at protecting those going through mental health crises and minors from potential harms of AI. Rep. Kloba sponsored Ryan’s Law, which diversifies pain management options in end-of-life care. “I want to ensure that all people have access to care that works for them and gives them dignity in their final days,” Kloba expressed when asked about the importance of Ryan's Law.
She seeks re-election to continue her focus on consumer safety and AI. Rep. Kloba has been a featured panelist and moderator at a variety of technology and policy events around the country. As a leader in the House on AI regulation and data security, Rep. Kloba aims to strengthen individual rights and consumer protection. This next legislative session, she hopes to continue fighting for consumers' right to use emerging technologies without risking their data security or personal well-being. She also highlighted the benefits of the millionaire's tax for working Washingtonians, emphasizing its positive implications. It is a tax on households earning over $1,000,000 per year, affecting less than 1% of Washington households. Rep. Kloba states that the bill aims to “balance our extremely unfair tax code, and help working families and small businesses.”
The bill comes with a removal of all state income taxes on diapers (for all ages), grooming and hygiene products, over-the-counter medicines, a cut to small businesses' B&O tax, as well as an increase in the working families tax credit. Rep. Kloba is excited to be running for re-election for the Washington State House of Representatives 1st LD Position 2. She hopes for the opportunity to continue her work advocating for the needs of Legislative District 1 and for the rights of all Washingtonians.
